10 Questions

What Piece of Art and Design Have You Always Dreamed Of Making And Why?

I always want to produce something which will challenge me. And so depending on what I have made for my previous projects, my dream of what I want to make changes.

Up until last project I had always wanted to make a hand crafted and beautiful book. So having made this a reality, my new dream is something very different. I would like to make some sort of fashion or costume piece. I'm using textiles more and more in my artwork, and so I would like to take this medium a step further and make a garment.

What Is Your Favourite Creative Area, Art Style or Techniques and Why?

My favourite creative area is illustration. Illustration has such a massive spectrum of styles and so never gets boring. I love a huge contrast of different types of illustration, ranging from very layered, low tec, hand rendered, collaged, sewed on pieces... to simple ink or pencil drawings which are beautifully intricate.

I don't tend to get drawn to images which are very computer generated, i think that over using digital media takes away the organic look which makes it individual and lovely in the first place.

Which Artists, Designers, Movements or Styles of Art Are You Passionate About And Why?

I love too many Artists and Designers, but to name a few I love;

-Alison Casson. Her work is too good, the way she mixes medias is flawless and I love the imagery she uses.

This is one of my favourite illustrations of hers, i think the pencil with the watercolour and the added collage of birds is so lovely and inspiring.

-Dan Hillier. I discovered his screen prints in London's Bricklane inside
the Old Truman Brewery where he has a stall selling his work. His juxtaposition of animals and humans to create a Victorian looking mythological creature is so clever and really grabs you visually.

-
Courtney Brims. Her illustrations are hauntingly beautiful.
This is an illustration of Snow White, I love how she has incorporated all the elements from the story in subtle ways. The wolf mask and tree branches for hair are so well thought up. I love the detail on the hood too.

-Tabitha Emma. She creates really pretty, girly illustrations that goes along side a fairytale so well.
This is her interpretation of The Princess and the
Pea. Its such a lovely contemporary illustration,
I really like to see traditional fairy tales
illustrated in contemporary ways, just
because you tend to think of old fashioned images
alongside them.

What Other Non Art Related Things Are You Passionate About And Why?

I love reading.

I also love music; going to gigs and festivals.

I love to cook- I get so much satisfaction from being able to cook from scratch and bring pleasure to others who eat it.

Explain What Else Inspires You And Why?

Definitely books - I love Illustration Play (viction:ary), Romantik (Die Gestalten Verlag), Illustration Now! (Taschen) and Ultimate Illustration (Collins Design) to name a few. Just flicking through beautiful pages of design has so much impact on me, it really gets the ball rolling if I'm stuck. I then go onto research the inspiring designers further to then get me the full insight to what the designer is like.

I also love the adverts made by fashion designers in magazines, they have so much going for them now. They are so organic, and they really play up to whats 'in' at the moment. I love the adverts by Mulberry and Valentino.

What Was The Last Book, T.V, Song, or Film That Inspired You And Why?
'Lungs' by Florence and the Machine is an incredible album. I think everything about the songs and the album artwork reflect the type of imagery and atmosphere I love in Illustration. Her songs really allow you to imagine a scene in your head, and the photography on the inside is magical.

What Idea's or Concepts Would You Like To Put Into A Piece Of Work?

I'd like to look into the darker side of a Fairy Tale. As a child you don't think far into them, and then once grown up, you don't read or watch them again, so I'd be interested to analyse them and re introduce them to an older audience, showing the real meanings.

Where Would I Like To Be In Five Years?

I would like to have finished my degree in Illustration successfully, and working as an Intern, or doing some small pieces for people, slowly building up my contacts. Realistically, I will need a long time to be in a stable place, earning a proper living.

What Lessons or Projects Have You Enjoyed Doing Over The Last Two Years?

I loved the Personal Journey project, just for the fact that I was able to work independently with not too much set work, it was up to me to build my project. I also liked making the graphic novel of Blade Runner.

What Makes Me Different From Everyone Else?

I'm very focused and motivated for my age and level. I really do want to succeed. I'm realistic, and I know success doesn't just happen over night, it happens from working hard.

I like to think I'm quite sophisticated, I like to dress nicely, i like to take care with my appearance.

I also love to visit cities, i find them so exciting! In the future the city I'd most like to visit is Moscow.

Another joy in life is being treated to afternoon tea! Yummy.
